God of the Mountains and the Valleys

1 Kings 20:22-30  “God of The Mountains and the Valleys”

22 And the prophet came to Ahab, king of Israel, and said to him, “Go, strengthen yourself; take note, and see what you should do, for in the spring of the year the king of Syria will come up against you.”

·     1st of the new year – the trouble will be back!

take note, and see what you should do,:

·      Evaluating the outcome of a victory or defeat always helps to prepare you for the next battle.

o  “I AM” – came to battle, and defeated the Syrians.

§  If the Lord came to battle for you and you didn’t even ask Him to – what would you surmise?

§  If the Lord stood in the gap for you and you didn’t even ask Him to – who would you look to in the future battles?

§  If the Lord gave you a plan to win with – wouldn’t you ask Him for plans in the future?

o  Baal never even showed up

§  No word from Baal’s prophetess – Jezebel?

§  No word from the prophets of Ashtoreth?  (400 of such)

·      Simple reason – there are only demons of these gods.

·     It’s been a long winter

o  7000 men without their beautiful wives and precious children

o  A empty pit in the middle of your stomach

§  Imagining the horrors your wife is enduring by the Syrians

§  Pain you just can’t walk away from

§  Only getting them back will ever suffice

Switching scenes now to Syria:

23 Then the servants of the king of Syria said to him, “Their gods are gods of the hills. Therefore they were stronger than we; but if we fight against them in the plain, surely we will be stronger than they.

·      Once again – the Devil, the Flesh, and the World are NEVER satisfied!

o  The Syrians are feeling their oats again

§  “Well, you see, it’s quite simple, they had an unfair advantage against us – they took the high position, we had to take the low position.”

·      “Their gods are in temples on the top of hills, high places”

§  “Let’s settle this fairly – let’s draw them out onto the plain, the valleys.”

§  Your enemies never consider the advantage the Lord gives you – in all things.

1 Samuel 17:47   Then all this assembly shall know that the Lord does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the Lord’s, and He will give you into our hands.”

Why do wicked men continue to prosper in this world?

·      God has a purpose in every wicked man!

·      Remember – you were once very wicked!

God of the Mountains:

·      Mt. Sinai (Horeb) with Moses and Elijah:

The Hebrew name of God written in the Mountains of Shiloh

Jeremiah 7:12

“But go now to My place which was in Shiloh, where I set My name at the first, and see what I did to it because of the wickedness of My people Israel.

The “SHIN” – written in the mountains of Jerusalem.

Deuteronomy 6:4–9

4 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one!

5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.

6 “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart.

7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.

8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.

9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

And Deuteronomy 11:13-21

24 So do this thing:
Dismiss the (drunken) kings, each from his position, and put captains in their places;

25 and you shall muster an army like the army that you have lost, horse for horse and chariot for chariot. Then we will fight against them in the plain; surely we will be stronger than they.” And he listened to their voice and did so.

26 So it was, in the spring of the year, that Ben-Hadad II mustered the Syrians and went up to Aphek to fight against Israel.

·     Kings are figure-heads – let’s just have warriors out there!

·      These 32 Kings were just drunks!  Worthless!

o  Never follow a bunch of drunks into war! – actually anywhere!

27 And the children of Israel were mustered and given provisions, and they went against them.

Now the children of Israel encamped before them like two little flocks of goats,

while the Syrians filled the countryside.

·      What a picture is being drawn here:

o  A virtual sea of Syrians

o  In the midst of that sea of warriors –

§  2 little floating boats of children – bobbing about in a storm

§  2 little flocks of goats

·      Disorganized, scattered, hard to lead

o   “If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, ‘tis now!

§  If ever I needed to hear from You, it’s right now Lord!

§  Insurmountable odds – now, will you walk by faith or sight?

2 Corinthians 5:7   For we walk by faith, not by sight.

Hebrews 11:1   Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

28 Then a man of God came and spoke to Ahab, the king of Israel, and said, “Thus says the Lord: ‘Because the Syrians have said, “The Lord is God of the hills, but He is not God of the valleys,” therefore I will deliver all this great multitude into your hand, and you shall know that I am the Lord.’ ”

·      Thank you Lord for the calm assurance that comes with knowing we are doing Your will.

29 And they encamped opposite each other for seven days.

So it was that on the seventh day the battle was joined;

and the children of Israel killed one hundred thousand foot soldiers of the Syrians in one day.

30 But the rest fled to Aphek, into the city;

then a wall fell on twenty-seven thousand of the men who were left.

And Ben-Hadad fled and went into the city, into an inner chamber.

·     What God can do with a few goats!

o  100,000 fierce Syrian warriors – dead in the fields.

o    27,000 dead in the city of Aphek

·      The Mountain Top experiences are obviously the Lord

·      What about the VALLEY TROUBLES?

o  Valley things happen to all of us.

·     Now it’s time for the enemy to hide from the Lord!
