Praying with Hezekiah

2 Kings 19:8-37  “Praying With Hezekiah”

The Assyrian army has come prepared with propaganda and scare tactics to take Jerusalem.

2 Kings 19:6–7

6 And Isaiah said to them, “Thus you shall say to your master, ‘Thus says the Lord: “Do not be afraid of the words which you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed Me.

7 Surely I will send a spirit upon him, and he shall hear a rumor and return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.” ’ ”


8 Then the Rabshakeh returned and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah, for he heard that he had departed from Lachish.

·      Libnah — transparency; whiteness.   [1]


·      Sennacharib is getting closer to Jerusalem.

o  Assyrian army’s main thrust is getting closer

o  Rabshakeh was sent to save the bloodshed on both sides.


9 And the king heard concerning Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, “Look, he has come out to make war with you.”

So he again sent messengers (with a letter) to Hezekiah, saying,

10 “Thus you shall speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying: ‘Do not let your God in whom you trust deceive you, saying, “Jerusalem shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.”

11 Look! You have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands by utterly destroying them; and shall you be delivered?

12 Have the gods of the nations delivered those whom my fathers have destroyed, Gozan and Haran and Rezeph, and the people of Eden who were in Telassar?

13 Where is the king of Hamath, the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah?’ ”

14 And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it;

and Hezekiah went up to the house of the Lord, and spread it before the Lord.

·      Satan plants the thought often:

Genesis 3:1   Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”


o  God is a liar.

o  God fools His children.

o  God wants to keep His best from His own.

o  God doesn’t want you to know too much – ignorance is bliss


·      Satan is going to continue to send his messengers to you!

o  Satan’s kingdom is at stake

o  Every time you speak the Word of God you are planting faith in the hearer’s heart.

Romans 10:17    So then faith comes by hearing,

and hearing by the word of God.

§  Satan will tell you:

·      “You’re not qualified!”

·      “You’re a sinner!”

·      “They’ll hate you!”

·      “You will lose the argument!”


So, we spread it before the Lord:

·      He is in no need of reading the accusers letters

o  He wants us to spread the letters in humility before Him

o  Lay out the plans, the blueprints of our proposed actions

·      We humbly see His sufficiency

o  Our sufficiency needs no faith

o  His sufficiency is motivated by our faith in Him.


·       Isaiah records the same history:    Isaiah 37:8–14


15 Then Hezekiah prayed before the Lord, and said:

“O Lord God of Israel, the One who dwells between the cherubim,

You are God,

You alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth.

You have made heaven and earth.

·      Hezekiah’s prayer begins with his rehearsal of:

o  What a great God He is

o  What great things He has done

o  What great things He is able to do

·      A = adoration – praise, worship, appreciation, rehearse who HE is.

Psalm 5:7  But as for me, I will come into Your house in the multitude of Your mercy;

In fear of You I will worship toward Your holy temple.


Psalm 29:2   Give unto the Lord the glory due to His name; Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.


Psalm 95:6–7

6 Oh come, let us worship and bow down; Let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.

7 For He is our God, And we are the people of His pasture, And the sheep of His hand. Today, if you will hear His voice:


·      C = Confession – humility, agreeing with GOD about who you are and what you have done.

1 John 1:7–10

7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.


·     T = Thanksgiving – a heart of gratitude for all He has done for you.

1 Thessalonians 5:16–23

16 Rejoice always,

17 pray without ceasing,

18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

19 Do not quench the Spirit.

20 Do not despise prophecies.

21 Test all things; hold fast what is good.

22 Abstain from every form of evil.

23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.


·      S = Supplication – lastly – a heart of intercession for all you would like HIM to do for you and others.

Psalm 116:1   I love the Lord, because He has heard My voice and my supplications.


Psalm 143:1  Hear my prayer, O Lord, Give ear to my supplications! In Your faithfulness answer me, And in Your righteousness.


1 Timothy 2:1–4

1 Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men,

2 for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence.

3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior,

4 who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.



16 Incline Your ear, O Lord, and hear;

open Your eyes, O Lord, and see;

and hear the words of Sennacherib, which he has sent to reproach the living God.

·      Hear, O LORD!

o  What Your enemies have said

o  Hear the words of blasphemy that Sennacherib says against You!

·      See, O LORD!

o  What Your enemies have done

o  God sees all that they do – and sometimes He waits to see what you will do in response.

§  Hezekiah chose to pray, to lay it down.


17 Truly, Lord, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands,

18 and have cast their gods into the fire; for they were not gods, but the work of men’s hands—wood and stone.

Therefore they destroyed them.


·      Here then we further discover why the Lord came against Israel and Judah.

·      Hezekiah had cleansed Jerusalem but he couldn’t cleanse northern Israel or the remainder of Judah

·      GOD then spared Jerusalem BECAUSE they had rid themselves of the pagan altars and idols.


19 Now therefore, O Lord our God, I pray, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You are the Lord God, You alone.”

20 Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying,

“Thus says the Lord God of Israel:

‘Because you have prayed to Me against Sennacherib king of Assyria,

I have heard.’


You prayed

I heard!

·      Nothing else is needed – God springs into action

·      In His own time

·      In His own way

AND – we wait


21 (Isaiah continues in song:)

This is the word which the Lord has spoken (sung) concerning him:

·      Think of this – this is actually the Lord’s song!

o  The Holy Spirit is singing this through Isaiah

‘The virgin, the daughter of Zion,

Has despised you, laughed you to scorn;

The daughter of Jerusalem

Has shaken her head behind your back!

22 ‘Whom have you reproached and blasphemed?

Against whom have you raised your voice,

And lifted up your eyes on high?

Against the Holy One of Israel.

23 By your messengers you have reproached the Lord,

And said: “By the multitude of my chariots I have come up to the height of the mountains,

To the limits of Lebanon;

I will cut down its tall cedars

And its choice cypress trees;

I will enter the extremity of its borders,

To its fruitful forest.

24 I have dug and drunk strange water,

And with the soles of my feet I have dried up

All the brooks of defense.”

25 ‘Did you not hear long ago

How I made it,

From ancient times that I formed it?

Now I have brought it to pass,

That you should be

For crushing fortified cities into heaps of ruins.

26 Therefore their inhabitants had little power;

They were dismayed and confounded;

They were as the grass of the field

And the green herb,

As the grass on the housetops

And grain blighted before it is grown.

27 ‘But I know your dwelling place,

Your going out and your coming in,

And your rage against Me.

28 Because your rage against Me and your tumult

Have come up to My ears,

Therefore I will put My hook in your nose

And My bridle in your lips,
And I will turn you back

By the way which you came.

29 ‘This shall be a sign to you:

You shall eat this year such as grows of itself,

And in the second year what springs from the same;

Also in the third year sow and reap,

Plant vineyards and eat the fruit of them.

30 And the remnant who have escaped of the house of Judah

Shall again take root downward,

And bear fruit upward.

31 For out of Jerusalem shall go a remnant,

And those who escape from Mount Zion.

The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.’   (end of song)

32 Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the king of Assyria:

‘He shall not come into this city,

Nor shoot an arrow there,

Nor come before it with shield,

Nor build a siege mound against it.

33 By the way that he came,

By the same shall he return;

And he shall not come into this city,’ Says the Lord.





34 For I will defend this city, to save it For My own sake and for My servant David’s sake.’ ”

35 And it came to pass on a certain night that the angel of the Lord went out, and killed in the camp of the Assyrians one hundred and eighty-five thousand; and when people arose early in the morning, there were the corpses—all dead.

·      His army is all dead

o  185,000 troops!

o  So would Sennacherib be soon.


36 So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed and went away, returned home, and remained at Nineveh.

37 Now it came to pass, as he was worshiping in the temple of Nisroch [5] his god, that his sons Adrammelech [6] and Sharezer [7] struck him down with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Ararat. Then Esarhaddon his son reigned in his place.

·      As prophesied! – v7

2 Kings 19:7    Surely I will send a spirit upon him, and he shall hear a rumor and return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.” ’ ”

·      In lands where there was no election of Kings there would often be murder, particularly by relatives of the King.

o  They would surely think that after Sennacherib’s great loss in Jerusalem that they could do much better.
